Last night I was watching this week’s episode of Big Shots on ABC.com. The character Brody has been commanded by his domineering wife to write poetry about their relationship. . . he has been permitted to borrow liberally from other writers. He’s reciting the final fruits of his labor to his friends at the country club, who all swear it sounds awfully familiar.
Turns out he’s citing Bon Jovi verbatim, something Duncan calls as soon as he joins the group. . . James and Carl razz Brody because if you’re going to steal from someone, they thought someone like Shakespeare would be more appropriate. Duncan points out that “In New Jersey, Bon Jovi is Shakespeare.”
What makes that scene even more memorable is the pilates class I taught this morning. Afterwards a guy came up to see what CD I played for background noise ( I used Bon Jovi’s Have a Nice Day album). He says “[Bon Jovi]‘s an interesting name. . .how’d they come up with that?”
I really thought he was joking. . .then I realized he wasn’t. “It’s the phonetic spelling of the lead singer’s last name.”
“Oh, is he French?”
“No, Italian.”
Don’t you pretty much have to be living under a rock to have never heard of the band Bon Jovi. . . seeing as this guy is old enough to be my father, at the very least he’d have heard the old school tunes of the 80s that secured their legendary status.
You can take the girl out of Jersey. . .
