Boo! Ben & Jerry's in Santa Monica

ben-jerry

I swung by my local B&J’s for my complementary election day scoop in celebration of a certain Obama victory.  I got there about 7:40pm.  The complementary scoop offer ran from 5pm-8pm.

At about 7:45pm the owner came out, walking towards the end of the line, which must have been about 40 people deep and told us to “go away.”  He insisted he was closing the doors at 8pm.

About 10 minutes later he repeated his pronouncement to a line that had grown even longer.  But we didn’t actually believe he’d do it.  “Go away!” he said.  “Don’t you understand?”

It’s election day. If you’re in line when the polls close, they keep the voting going until the last person finishes voting.  In the spirit of this election, you’d have thunk he’d do just the same.

But no. At 8pm he cut off the person in front of the door and closed it, refusing to allow anyone else to enter.  There was still a line trailing 3 store fronts.

So now when I think Ben & Jerry’s, I think “Go Away!”  Probably not the positive branding the corporate office was seeking.

I’m imagining the owner as a bitter McCain supporter. . . thus I’m feeling more forgiving than usual.

A new ice cream alternative

If dairy does the jig in your digestive tract or you’re trying to get away from processed sugar, I’m happy to report that Turtle Mountain has a new coconut milk-based ice cream line, sweetened with Agave syrup. I picked up a pint of the Coconut flavor, naturally, and it was divine. The frozen treat has the same smooth, creamy texture of coconut milk, without the iciness of ice cream that’s too aerated.

Whole Foods carries a selection of their five flavors: Vanilla Bean, Chocolate, Cookie Dough, Mint Chocolate Chip and Coconut; other grocery chains nationwide will pick it up later in the year.  At this point I say pass on the Chocolate, it just doesn’t hold up as a dairy-free flavor, but the gluten-free Cookie Dough may just be my new favorite ice-cream.  Cookie Dough chunks and brittle fudgey bits!

With a heat wave in progress, it’s a great treat!

It's a big ice cream week

Ben & Jerry’s is featuring their Annual Free Cone Day on Tuesday, April 29th, celebrating the 30th anniversary of their company.  I for one am a fan of Ben & Jerry’s not just for bringing me Phish Food, Cake Batter, and Creme Brulee flavored ice cream, but for commitment to community and corporate social responsibility.

Ben & Jerry’s is founded on and dedicated to a sustainable corporate concept of linked prosperity.  Our mission consists of 3 interrelated parts:

Product Mission
To make, distribute & sell the finest quality all natural ice cream & euphoric concoctions with a continued commitment to incorporating wholesome, natural ingredients and promoting business practices that respect the Earth and the Environment.

Economic Mission
To operate the Company on a sustainable financial basis of profitable growth, increasing value for our stakeholders & expanding opportunities for development and career growth for our employees.

Social Mission
To operate the company in a way that actively recognizes the central role that business plays in society by initiating innovative ways to improve the quality of life locally, nationally & internationally.

Find a shop near you for a free scoop on Tuesday.  Would it be wrong to visit more than one Ben & Jerry’s location on Tuesday?

If you’re busy on Tuesday, Baskin-Robbins is hosting 31 cent scoop night from 5-10pm on Wednesday.  In return, make a donation to be contributed to local fire fighter charities.  Even if you leave just a buck behind, that cone is still half price.

Worth the pain of lactose intolerance

I don’t eat dairy…most of the time. My mother told me that even when I was little I didn’t like milk. I can see my dislike of milk being a problem — perhaps it’s why I’m stunted at 5 ft 5.5 inches instead of being my dream height of 5 ft 8in.

On rare occasion, though, I crave ice cream, but it’s got to be the kind of ice cream worth the effects of lactose intolerance. I’ve long been a fan of Haagen Daz, but I recently discovered something far more supreme….Dr. Bob’s.

It sounds like an absurd name for an ice cream company, but I assure you it’s worth every high-priced penny (lots of premium ingredients). I picked up a pint of Scharffen Berger REALLY Dark Chocolate today, and it is rich and luscious, and you want to make that pint last forever for fear there may not be more of the decadent delight at the grocery store when you go back Dr. Bob is known for the funky flavorings in his handmade ice creams; I actually almost bought a pint of Strawberries with Sour Cream and Brown Sugar, but I thought it was out there even for me. Bob seems particularly fond of Scharffen Berger chocolate, given the wide variety of chocolate flavors, including the more basic “Dark Chocolate” (vs. the REALLY Dark Chocolate that I bought today).

It appears it is only sold in stores in Southern California. But for those of you chocolate fiends in other parts of the country, anything can be had for a price. Dr. Bob’s people will overnight you 6 pints packed in dry ice.
