The Leading Man: Prop Knife Replaced With Real One

Vienna theater actor possible target for murder:

An actor slit his throat on stage when the prop knife for his suicide scene turned out to be a real one.

Daniel Hoevels, 30, slumped over with blood pouring from his neck while the audience broke into applause at the “special effect”. Police are investigating whether the knife was a mistake or a murder plot. They are questioning the rest of the cast, and backstage hands with access to props; they will also carry out DNA tests.

Instantly reminded me of the ending of The Leading Man, a little seen indie from 1996 starring Jon Bon Jovi, Anna Galiena, Lambert Wilson and Thandie Newton.  Anyone else see that movie?

Democrats on fire Tuesday night

New York Senator and Former Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton has my respect again tonight; she more than delivered for the Democratic Party with a speech that received multiple standing ovations.  I don’t doubt more Americans watched tonight than last night because the CNN live feed kept crashing.  Thanks CNN!

A humorous clip and then some quotes.

No way. No how. No McCain.

To my supporters, my champions — my sisterhood of the traveling pantsuits – from the bottom of my heart: Thank you. You never gave in. You never gave up. And together we made history.
Jobs lost, houses gone, falling wages, rising prices. The Supreme Court in a right-wing headlock and our government in partisan gridlock. The biggest deficit in our nation’s history. Money borrowed from the Chinese to buy oil from the Saudis. Putin and Georgia, Iraq and Iran.
I want you to ask yourselves: Were you in this campaign just for me? Or were you in it for that young Marine and others like him? Were you in it for that mom struggling with cancer while raising her kids? Were you in it for that boy and his mom surviving on the minimum wage? Were you in it for all the people in this country who feel invisible?
John McCain says the economy is fundamentally sound. John McCain doesn’t think that 47 million people without health insurance is a crisis. John McCain wants to privatize Social Security. And in 2008, he still thinks it’s okay when women don’t earn equal pay for equal work.
Harriett Tubman had one piece of advice.
If you hear the dogs, keep going.
If you see the torches in the woods, keep going.
If they’re shouting after you, keep going.
Don’t ever stop. Keep going.
If you want a taste of freedom, keep going.
Even in the darkest of moments, ordinary Americans have found the faith to keep going. . .
But remember, before we can keep going, we have to get going by electing Barack Obama president.

And who knew the Governor of Montana Brian Schweitzer was such an engaging speaker?

Even leaders in the oil industry know that Senator McCain has it wrong. We simply can’t drill our way to energy independence, even if you drilled in all of John McCain’s backyards, including the ones he can’t even remember.

Senate candidate and former Virginia Governor Mark Warner

I know we’re at the Democratic Convention, but if an idea works, it really doesn’t matter if it has an “R” or “D” next to it. Because this election isn’t about liberal versus conservative. It’s not about left versus right. It’s about the future versus the past. . .

Look at health care. If we bring down costs and cover everyone, not only will America be healthier, we’ll be more competitive in the global economy. Just think about this: In six months, we will have an administration that actually believes in science! And then we can again lead the world in live-saving and life-changing cures. . .

In a global economy, you shouldn’t have to leave your home town to find a world-class job.

Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius

I’m sure you remember a girl from Kansas who said there’s no place like home. Well, in John McCain’s version, there’s no place like home. And a home. And home. And home.

PS. Seeing as the NYT dubbed Jon Bon Jovi an elderstatesman of NJ (despite his NYC residence), I’ve been wondering if he’d move over from team Clinton at some point. . . I see he got the memo.  He’ll be playing 2 accoustic songs before Obama’s Thursday night speech and Springsteen gets to close out the acceptance speech.

Hypocrisy: An Example

I preface this labeling of hypocrisy by saying Bon Jovi is my favorite band, and I count Jon Bon Jovi as one of of my heroes when it comes to the philanthropic pursuits he (and his wife) support.

From PRnewswire on March 25th:

Bon Jovi has again selected NativeEnergy, a leading provider of high quality carbon offsets and climate crisis solutions, as the official carbon offset provider for its international Lost Highway Tour. Working directly with NativeEnergy, Bon Jovi has calculated and offset the carbon impact its 2008 world tour will have on the climate; offsetting more than 5,000 tons of carbon dioxide from the six-month tour…

“Through NativeEnergy we are making an investment in renewable energy projects that we hope will result in efficient alternatives to power our tours in the future,” says Jon Bon Jovi. “Until then, we want to help those who are seeking solutions to a problem we can’t afford to ignore.”

The press release and Jon’s frequent use of the word “we” implies that he speaks for the Bon Jovi collective, not just himself. Global warming BAD; we’re doing what we can.

That night, Richie Sambora gets picked up for a DUI, while driving a HUMMER. How is that remotely an environment-friendly choice of a vehicle? They spend more time NOT on tour than on tour.   Sigh.

QOD: Life in the big cities

84m.jpg

Did anyone else see Little City (1997) starring Jon Bon Jovi and Penelope Ann Miller?

Adam: People who are tragically ambitious and smart go to New York and people who are just tragically smart come [to San Francisco].
Rebecca: Oh. Well what about people who are just tragically ambitious?
Adam: They go to LA.

During election season, it begs the question, are people who go to DC just ruthlessly ambitious?
