VOD: Prop 8 legislates discrimination

As I noted a few days ago, some day attempts to ban gay marriage will someday seem as absurd as banning interracial marriage.  . . The “Vote No” campaign has released a video to that point:

McCain campaign twist: Obama Assassination attempt foiled

ATF arrests skinheads planning to kill Obama.

The two planned to shoot 88 black people and decapitate another 14, he added. The numbers 88 and 14 are symbolic in the white supremacist community.

“They said that would be their last, final act — that they would attempt to kill Sen. Obama,” Cavanaugh said. “They didn’t believe they would be able to do it, but that they would get killed trying.”

Which jackass from the McCain campaign is going to see this development as a talking point for voting McCain.  . . . No one’s trying to shoot our guy, so McCain is a safer bet, even as a repeat skin cancer survivor.

Who knew Commander-in-Chief could be one of the most dangerous jobs in the country, despite the heavy security detail?

Blackmail only works if you think you're doing something wrong

California’s Proposition 8 is probably one of the most followed pieces of legislation on the ballot next month. Nearly $60 million in donations have poured into campaigns fighting for and against the elimination of the right of homosexuals to marry.

Towards the end of last week, proponents contacted businesses that donated money to the opposition, demanding equal donations. . . or else.  Those seeking to ban gay marriage threatened to publish the names of all businesses making financial contributions to the campaign against Prop 8.

“Make a donation of a like amount to ProtectMarriage.com which will help us correct this error,” reads the letter. “Were you to elect not to donate comparably, it would be a clear indication that you are in opposition to traditional marriage. … The names of any companies and organizations that choose not to donate in like manner to ProtectMarriage.com but have given to Equality California will be published.”

The campaign to “vote no” is supported by companies like Apple and Google, who support equal rights for their homosexual and heterosexual employees.  Even the California Teacher’s Union is encouraging voters to strike down the discriminatory change to California’s Constitution.

That the hate mongers believe businesses fear being outed for their support of the campaign to strike down Prop 8 shows how out of touch they are.   The reason people want to see that Proposition struck down is because it discriminates against a minority group in California.  They’re not ashamed of their support; they’re proud to be taking a stand against what they view as a colossal wrong.

Article XI, Section 12 of California’s Constitution reads:

No contract of marriage, if otherwise duly made, shall be invalidated for want of conformity to the requirements of any religious sect.

Condemning homosexual marriage is based on moral leanings rooted in religion, thus violating the spirit of the California Constitution.  The state government covers civil marriage, religious marriage is up to your place of religious practice.

Some day in the not too distant future, banning gay marriage is going to seem as bizarre as legislating against interracial marriage.

VOD: Another No on Prop 8 ad

I definitely like this one better than the previous Mac V. PC inspired ad.

Homer Simpson and vote fraud in West Virginia

A few weeks ago, Homer Simspon tried to vote for Obama, but was foiled by rigged electronic ballots. Each time he tried to select Obama, another vote for McCain was registered.   His polling booth ultimately ate him as he tried to escape to tell people about the fraud taking place.

Turns out life is imitating art in West Virginia. In 2 counties, a number of early voters are seeing their votes for Democrats switched to Republicans by the voting machines, an error not all poll workers know how to correct.

Shelba Ketchum, a 69-year-old nurse retired from Thomas Memorial Hospital, described what happened Friday at the Putnam County Courthouse in Winfield.

‘I pushed buttons and they all came up Republican,’ she said. “I hit Obama and it switched to McCain. I am really concerned about that. . .”

Retired factory worker Calvin Thomas of Ripley said he experienced the same problem.

‘When I pushed Obama, it jumped to McCain. When I went down to governor’s office and punched [Gov. Joe] Manchin, it went to the other dude.

‘After I finished, my daughter voted. When she pushed Obama, it went to McCain. It happened to her the same way it happened to me,’ Thomas said.

It’s a potent reminder that on election day, we should be sure the right boxes have been checked or circles punched through before finalizing our ballots.

VOD: How to talk to your parents about John McCain

The wonders of new media in 2008 have encouraged creative people to spoof recognized material and remix campaign gaffes.

In this case, the classic approach to the Partnership for a Drug-Free America ads is put in play to publicize the Partnership for a McCain-Free White House (created by MoveOn.org).  Parents and grandparents are more apt to be convinced by their kids making a rational argument than the umpteenth attack ad or robocall in their voice mail.

Should your parents show the warning signs that they’ll be voting McPalin, the website prepares you for THE Conversation.  A “guide,” much like the more serious site,  provides tips as how to approach a conversation with mom/dad, as well as talking points about voting for Obama and links to more information.

VOD: Vote no on Prop 8 in California

They say imitation is the finest form of flattery. . . Those Mac v. PC ad sparked lots of parallel ads on other topics.  Below is a new web ad encouraging California voters to vote NO on Prop 8, and amendment to deny homosexuals the right to marry.

Alternately, we have the walk a mile in my shoes approach.

Personally, I’m kind of over the Mac v. PC ad format.

QOD: Molly Ivins on Knives v. Guns

creepy photo by itsgreg

“I am not anti-gun. I’m pro-knife. Consider the merits of the knife. In the first place, you have to catch up with someone in order to stab him. A general substitution of knives for guns would promote physical fitness. We’d turn into a whole nation of great runners. Plus, knives don’t ricochet. And people are seldom killed while cleaning their knives.”

Molly Ivins, controversial Texan columnist

My junior year of high school we read a series of essays in English class. One of those essays was written by Molly Ivins.  More than a decade later, I still remember being throughly impressed with her half-joking suggestion that we swap guns for knives and the defense weapon of choice.

She made a point; people don’t accidentally kill people with knives.
